Cut subscription spend: find the charge, act with approval
Most subscription waste is a quiet renewal. A Grok Bot can inventory those charges, try a plan without paying, watch the price, draft the cancel or retention ask, and stop for your yes before anything leaves your account.

Subby is the fullest community implementation of a personal subscription spend cut in the directory: eight skills covering mail inventory (including spam), cost analysis, usage checks, overlap, cheaper alternatives, refund and cancellation drafts, and a weekly recheck routine.
Its memories require citing the email or document for every figure, never inventing amounts, and never cancelling, paying, or sending without a per-service yes. Gmail is the default plugin; bank statements are welcome when the owner shares them.
The playbook
The job is spend you already authorized that you no longer want at the current price. Default intake is connected mail: receipt, invoice, and renewal senders. Official templates each do one motion—Try it, don't pay for it, Find unused subscriptions, Watch subscription prices, or Subscription Cleaner for newsletter noise. Community templates add multi-step inventory (Subby), a bills dashboard (Bills & Subscriptions Manager), negotiation drafts (Haggle Bot, Bill Slasher & Subscription Hunter), and phone cancel or retention through ClawCall with webhook call alerts (Subscription Smasher, Bill Negotiator). Reddit threads from Grok Bot users in the last three months show the same pattern: clear dead newsletters, cancel old plans, put bills on the calendar, and run one-off retention chats—more often than a full Rocket Money-style audit write-up. Nothing is cancelled, sent, signed, or paid until you approve that specific action.
Widen intake only when mail is thin. Open the service's billing or signup page in the bot browser so prices and cancel controls come from the live page. If you bank on Mercury, install the Mercury plugin (MCP) for balances, transactions, statements, and spend analysis—payment requests still need approval inside Mercury. If cancel requires a phone call, Subscription Smasher and Bill Negotiator use ClawCall; paste the routine webhook URL and key so results arrive without polling. If the charge only appears on a bank or card PDF, export the period and share the rows so the bot can match merchants. Watch your own bot or CLI plan too: Muse users have reported silent switches to pay-as-you-go at expiry—that is a price-watch and trial problem, not a reason to treat Muse as a cancel assistant.
Run in this order: inventory → decide → act → verify. Inventory first with Find unused subscriptions, Subby, or Bills & Subscriptions Manager. Decide keep, cancel, negotiate, or watch price. Act with the matching bot—Try it, don't pay for it for new trials, Watch subscription prices before renewal, Haggle Bot or Bill Slasher & Subscription Hunter for counters, Subscription Smasher or Bill Negotiator for phone. Verify on the next receipt mail, billing page, Mercury transaction list, or statement export so the stopped charge is gone. The curated shelf Cut subscription spend with Grok Bots lists official and community seats with editor notes grounded in each template's skills and memories.
How to run a spend cut with a Grok Bot
Connect intake
Mail first (Gmail or Outlook). Add the Mercury MCP plugin if you use Mercury for business banking. For phone cancel or retention, connect ClawCall and paste the routine webhook URL and key into chat once so call results return without polling.
Import one official single-job bot
Match the situation: Try it, don't pay for it; Find unused subscriptions; Watch subscription prices; or Subscription Cleaner. Follow getting-started; each loads the built-in subscription-management skill for that section.
Or import a fuller community bot
Subby for inventory through refund drafts and a weekly recheck. Bills & Subscriptions Manager for a dashboard. Haggle Bot or Bill Slasher & Subscription Hunter for negotiation drafts. Subscription Smasher or Bill Negotiator when the provider only yields on a call.
Approve each consequential step
Signup, cancel, send, accept a retention price, or pay only after an explicit yes for that service. Drafts are the default; declined sends are final.
Recheck on a schedule
Use Subby's Monday recheck, Haggle's promo and renewal watch, Bill Slasher's weekly audit, or ClawCall follow-up routines. Stay quiet when nothing changed.
Close the books (optional)
Re-export the next statement period so cancelled merchants no longer look open in QuickBooks Online or your sheet.
