Import and customize a Grok Bot template: find it, add it, pause its routines, test it
A template is a shareable copy of someone else's Bot setup. This guide shows how to pick one, import it, read what you received, switch off what you do not want yet, and test it without surprises. It is checked against x.ai documentation on 2026-10-31.

The playbook
What you will get. A template running in your own account, with its routines paused until you have read them, its apps connected only as needed, and one safe test run behind you. If you only want a ranked list of templates, read Best Grok Bot Templates instead; this guide is about getting one working.
Prerequisites. As of 2026-10-31, per Get started: a plan that includes Grok Bot (Premium, Super or Ultra on The X Subscription, a linked SuperGrok or X Premium+ subscription, or a seat on a self-serve Grok Business plan), and the desktop or phone app signed in. Accounts on Privacy Mode (Legacy) must switch to Privacy Mode first. Plans and prices change often, so check the linked page before paying for anything.
What you are importing. The documentation says a template link exposes the Bot's identity, description, skills and routines, and does not include the author's memory or conversation history. Four terms matter:
- Memories are what a Bot remembers about you. A fresh import starts with none of the author's. Bots save things on their own initiative, so tell yours directly what must be kept. Logins and cards belong in Vault, not memory.
- Skills are reusable instructions for a task: when to use it, what access it needs, the steps and what needs approval. They come with the template and form a library shared by your Bots.
- Routines tell a Bot when to run a workflow, on a schedule or when an event happens, such as a Slack message or an email to the Bot's address. Each run uses your usage.
- Plugins are the apps a template was built to use, such as Gmail, Slack or Notion. The x.ai documentation calls these connected apps and does not use the word plugin as a formal term. The template page here lists them; each still needs your own sign-in.
Where this guide stops. We did not import or run a template for this draft, so every UI step is taken from x.ai documentation and marked untested where documentation was incomplete. Facts are as of 2026-10-31.
Troubleshooting.
- I cannot find the Import Bot button. Open Connect apps, then Bot templates, which opens the gallery on x.ai, and use the template's own link. If that fails, check you are signed in to the same account as the app. Untested.
- A routine did not run. Check it is not paused (Active is on), that When to run matches your expectation and time zone, and for Slack or webhook triggers that the event matched the criteria. A new routine waits for its next scheduled time.
- A run failed with 'Automation run rate limit exceeded'. The documentation lists limits of 300 runs an hour across all routines and 200 per routine, plus a known shared limit that can fail runs. Failed runs are not retried automatically; rerun with Test.
- The bot cannot find a skill. Skills are one private library shared across Bots. Open Connect apps, select the connected count next to the title and enable the skill for that Bot under Private skills.
- It knows things about the author. Memory is not copied, but skills and routines are, so read every prompt once (step 5).
- I want it gone. Delete erases the profile, conversations, memory, routines and attachments and cannot be undone; files on a shared computer may remain. Hide it from the sidebar if you might need it again.

Import and customize a template in 10 steps
Find a template and read it before adding it
Browse the template collections or the label hubs, then open the template's page here. Read its skills, routines and plugin list. Ask three questions: does it do one job you want, does it need apps you will not connect, and does it send, buy or delete anything? Write down the single outcome you want from it. Not run by us; this is a planning step.
Install the app and sign in
As of 2026-10-31, install the app from x.ai/bot, choose Sign in on the welcome screen and finish in your browser. Grok Business seat holders choose Sign in with Grok; SuperGrok and X Premium+ users link their subscription when the app asks. Source: Get started. Documented, not run by us.
Import the template (untested)
In the sidebar open Connect apps, choose Bot templates, and the gallery opens on x.ai in your browser. Open the template's link and choose Import Bot. For a template shared by link, the documentation describes opening the preview on x.ai and choosing Add to Grok Bot, then finishing in the app. The copy is created in your own account and does not receive the author's computer, logins or conversation history. Source: Bots. Untested: the documentation does not say whether you can paste a link inside the app, and we did not import anything.
Pause every routine before you do anything else
Click the Bot's name at the top of the chat to open its details. On the Details tab each routine has a switch that pauses or resumes it. Opening a routine shows its Instruction and When to run, with Pause or Resume, Test, Edit and Delete routine. On a phone, open the Bot's profile, tap a routine and turn off Active. Pausing now stops it firing at the author's times or hours while you read it. Hiding a Bot from the sidebar does not pause its routines. Source: Skills, routines and automations.
Read each skill and routine prompt, then remove the author's setup
Open every routine and read its Instruction. Look for names, email addresses, Slack channel names or keywords, regions, ids and example data that belong to the author, and edit or delete them. Check When to run and confirm the schedule. Prefer Pause over Delete while tuning, because deleting a routine cannot be undone. Our editors have seen templates that ship a routine named after the author's own assistant inbox or a region-specific keyword watch.
Set your time zone
Open Settings, then Bot, then Timezone and choose a zone, or Auto-detect, which follows your computer. Routine times are read in that zone, so a wrong zone looks like a bot that fires at the wrong hour. Source: Skills, routines and automations.
Run the first conversation and connect only the apps it needs
Most templates have a getting-started skill that asks setup questions one at a time. Answer them. When it asks you to connect an app, open Connect apps and follow the steps in Add plugins to a Grok Bot. Connect the minimum first. An app can do only what your own account can do.
Decide what may happen without you
Write one rule per outward action: drafts only for mail, no posting in shared channels, no purchases. When an approval card appears it offers Allow once, Always allow or Deny. Prefer Allow once until you trust the bot; Always allow can save a matching rule. The documentation advises requiring approval before sending, purchasing, deleting, publishing or changing production systems. Source: Security.
Test with safe inputs
Open a routine and choose Test. The button reads Running... until the run finishes, and results appear in the Bot's chat. If it cannot start you see Couldn't start a test run, and some routines do not offer Test; in that case run the work once in chat with safe input. Tests do real work and can call connected tools, so point them at a test label, a test channel or a sample document and keep send actions on draft. A new routine does not run when created; it waits for its next scheduled time. Source: Skills, routines and automations.
Turn on one routine, watch it for a week, then tune
Resume only the routine that serves your one outcome. Each time its output is wrong, say so in chat and keep a tally of useful versus ignored messages. Narrow a noisy routine (one channel instead of all of Slack, one label instead of the whole inbox), move it to a weekly schedule, or pause it. Add the sentence 'If this run finds nothing to do, end the turn with no message' to quiet ones. Every run uses usage, so frequent schedules and busy triggers cost more.
